Job Title: Senior Systems Mathematical Modeller

Location: This is a hybrid role, working from home with visits as required to one of our sites in Cowes, Broad Oak in Portsmouth, or Great Baddow in Chelmsford

Salary: Up to £53,000 depending on skills and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead mathematical modelling development devising and evolving algorithmic solutions to meet system capability and performance requirements of complex radar systems
  • Develop, maintain and evolve high-fidelity, high-integrity, high-complexity mathematical models of technical solutions for radar systems
  • Utilise mathematical modelling to identify and develop performance enhancements and novel solutions to improve existing radar product capability and evolve future radar technologies
  • Develop novel solutions to evolving technical challenges and emerging issues that our customer community are facing
  • Support multi-disciplined engineering teams in the realisation, implementation, verification and validation of algorithmic solutions for deployable radar systems
  • Utilise mathematical modelling to create performance predictions of radar systems in various operational scenarios
  • Utilise mathematical modelling to support integration and post trials performance analysis of radar systems, and the production of customer acceptance evidence
  • Be a technical focus point for development and analysis activities, preparing and presenting technical aspects to the required stakeholders
  • Apply a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience of Systems Engineering to design and develop solutions and resolve engineering issues and problems for a range of products and engineering situations

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • A strong mathematical mind-set with an innovative approach to problem solving that can be applied to resolving complex technical and system level requirements
  • Extensive experience of mathematical simulation tools/languages (e.g., Mathworks MATLAB, Simulink, Pearl, Python, MathCAD)
  • Experience of working with large scale complex system designs
  • Understands engineering principles and approaches and be capable of systems thinking, applying holistic approaches to complex problems
  • Demonstrates understanding, knowledge and experience of Systems Engineering including knowledge of appropriate Systems Engineering standards (e.g., ISO 15288)
  • Experience of some aspects of an engineering lifecycle and good knowledge of lifecycle models (e.g., Waterfall, Agile) and associated tools (e.g., JIRA)
  • Confident presenting both technical and non-technical information in a formal setting
  • Further education (or equivalent experience) in a relevant STEM discipline

Desirable:

  • An understanding of signal processing algorithms and techniques employed on contemporary radio, satellite, radar or sonar real-world systems
  • An understanding of factors that can affect the real-world performance of a radar and how these can impact the accuracy of a performance prediction from a mathematical model
  • Experience of using a high-level design methodology (e.g., SysML, UML) and/or a requirements management tool (e.g., IBM DOORS Next, DOORS Classic)
  • Knowledge of the defence industry

Radar Sector:

You will be working within a small product team of Systems Engineers from a bespoke portfolio of new and existing products within our prestigious Radar sector focusing on the identification, development and evolution of system capability solutions and enhancements from algorithmic definition and modelling, through to the verification and validation of these solutions. Technical input can be applicable to a range of products including the pursuit of transferable algorithmic solutions. This position provides excellent opportunities to develop both your own skills and also further your career within Maritime Services and the wider company.
